The first flight of Canadians flown out of Egypt arrived in Germany Tuesday and passengers are making their way back to Canada.
A number of passengers arrived in Calgary Tuesday afternoon.
Joan McDermott was one of the 174 Canadians who fled the country and said she saw tanks from her window in Cairo.
"It was very difficult to get to the airport," she said. "There were roadblocks everywhere."
She said police were targeted and gunshots could be heard.
The Canadians boarded the plane in Cairo Monday night chartered by the Canadian federal government.
But there was chaos before that flight as an airport official walked around with a hat, demanding thousands in U.S. dollars before allowing them on board.
One passenger reportedly forked over nearly $2,000.
