The name of Calgary's first homicide victim has been released.

Melake Selam Worku was shot to death in the early morning hours of New Year's Day.

The 27-year-old was found in the middle of the intersection of 3 Avenue and 3 Street S.W. Paramedics took him to hospital where he died.

He was one of two victims shot in the area.

Another man was inside a vehicle near the scene and was treated for gunshot wounds.

Investigators believe the surviving victim was unrelated to the people involved in the fatal shooting and was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.

Police arrested two men near the scene following a foot chase and have recovered two handguns.

Godwin Mawutor Bonney, 22, of Etobicoke, Ontario, has been charged with one count each of attempted murder, aggravated assault, pointing a firearm, unauthorized use of a firearm and possession of a weapon obtained by crime.

Another man has been released without charge.

Police are still looking for the man who fired the deadly shot.

He is described as a black man, 20 to 30 years old, 5'8" to 6' tall, with an average build. He had cornrows and short dreadlocks and was wearing a light-coloured shirt and dark pants.
