Pengrowth Energy Corporation has stemmed the flow of oil in one of its pipeline systems after an explosion rocked the Swan Hills area New Year's Day.

The incident happened around 7:30 a.m. near the Judy Creek gas processing facility, about 220 kilometres northwest of Edmonton. No injuries are reported and officials say staff at the company as well as local authorities managed to quickly contain the blaze.

"It is very remote," said company spokesperson Waseem Khalil of where the blast took place.

"There is nothing in terms of private residences or public facilities… I don't think there is much of an environmental hazard - most of the solution was burned off in the fire."

According to a company release sent out on Sunday, the pipeline is in the final stages of being depressurized and the fire is almost extinguished, burning only in the immediate area of the rupture.

RCMP and the Swan Hills Fire Department continue to investigate what caused the leak.

Pengrowth officials say they've shut-in about 2,200 barrels of oil – about the equivalent of a day's worth of production. Repairs are expected to take between five and ten days.
