Many Calgary neighbourhoods will have new, sobering, reminders not to drink and drive this holiday season.

It's all part of an ongoing campaign to Report Impaired Drivers (RID) which is a joint effort between police, the city, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

For the holiday season, new signs are being put up in 20 Calgary communities.

They encourage Calgarians to call 911 if they spot someone who may be drunk behind the wheel.

"We can all play our part in making the streets of our city safer - especially during the holiday season when more people take the risk of getting behind the wheel after a few drinks at a Christmas event," says Denise Dubyk from MADD Calgary.

The RID campaign has been going on for a year and police say having the public on board really helps.

"We've had an 80 percent increase in the calls to 911 from the public to report drunk drivers. And, as a result of that, we were able to apprehend and deal with 75 more impaired drivers as a result of this program," says Sgt. Doug McIlwraith from the Calgary Police Service.

Along with the neighbourhood reminders, there will also be larger signs on major routes heading into Calgary.
