A former education minister wants to get rid of the separate school systems in Alberta.

"It's important for Albertans to ask each other whether separate-but-equal schools for only two of many religious denominations belong in 21st century Alberta," David King said in a statement.

King also raised concerns about education funding.

"Where is the sense in funding parallel administrations, school facilities, and transportation services just so one denomination or another can enjoy special status in a community?" he said.

King has launched an information website and petition at http://www.separateschooleducation.ca/.

Current education minister Dave Hancock said Albertans have a constitutional right to faith-based education.

"It provides choice for parents and students in the province. It's been, for the most part, very effective for us in building a robust education system," Hancock said.

"I'm not sure what the petition hopes to accomplish but the reality is, we have a constitutional requirement and it would require a significant movement to change the constitution."
