Some retailers in Calgary have adopted Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving in the U.S. when many Americans do most of their Christmas shopping.

It's a day when retailers in the U.S. expect to turn a profit, or be "in the black."

But unlike in the U.S. where throngs of people line up for sales, there was no overwhelming rush to get in the doors in Calgary.

"This is nothing like it is in the States," said Mark Rivard, who came away with some deals at the Apple store. "There was no stampede, put it that way."

Apple was one of the retail giants to offer Black Friday specials. Sears also got in the act, calling the event a preview of Boxing Day.

Other retailers showed off Friday sale slogans. Dots advertised a "Fleece Frenzy" sale while Sport Chek rejected the Black Friday tag in favour of a more Canadian "Red and White" sale.

Jill MacDonald of Market Mall says it could take a long time before the biggest shopping day in the U.S. catches on in Canada.

Economists will also be keeping a close watch on Monday, also known as Cyber-Monday, considered the biggest online shopping day of the year.
