Alberta Sheriffs and the RCMP were out nailing bad drivers over the long weekend.

Officers laid almost 2,300 charges between Friday and Monday.

They caught more than 160 drunk drivers, handed out over 400 tickets for seatbelt and child restraint infractions and 1200 speeding tickets.

The crackdown was part of Operation Impact, a national campaign to make Canada's roads the safest in the world.

Alberta Transportation statistics from 2004 to 2008 show as many as eight people are killed in traffic collisions every Thanksgiving Day long weekend.

During October, RCMP and Sheriffs and their road safety partners are targeting unbelted drivers and passengers.
