Complaints are flowing in from women who have had the popular smoothing treatment known as the Brazilian Blowout.

Health Canada has issued a warning to salons to stop using the product immediately, after finding it contained dangerous levels of formaldehyde, a preservative that's been linked to cancer.

Calgary realtor Suzanne Harvey dreamed of straight, smooth locks.

Instead, she ended up losing her hair.

"I could feel it all over my arms. It was falling in the sink. I woke up the next day, it's on the pillows, it's on the bed. It's everywhere," she says.

There's concern at salons across the city.

"My concern is pulling it off the shelves right away and making sure we've actually cancelled all our clients,"" says Troy Winget, owner of Red Bloom Salon.

Others say they not only feel duped, but ripped off. The Brazilian Blowout started at over $300 per treatment.

And that now means thousands of dollars in lost revenue.

The product lists no ingredients, but claims to be preservative free right on the bottle.

Health Canada believes the reactions are caused by formaldehyde becoming aerosolized during the blow drying and flat ironing stages of the treatment.

Numerous calls and emails by CTV to the American manufacturer of the product were not returned.

The local distributor in Calgary, Modern Beauty Supplies isn't talking either.

Health Canada says it will be now working with the Canadian distributor of the treatment to address concerns.

Any consumers who have had reactions to the treatment should see their doctor.
