A Calgary-based company is now helping the massive efforts to rescue 33 Chilean miners trapped underground.

Precision Drilling, one of Canada's largest drilling contractors has been contacted by the Chilean Government and asked to help.

The company has now moved one of its drilling rigs to the mine to assist in the rescue operations.

The rig was sitting idle in Chile about 1,000 kilometres from the rescue operation, but now a Calgary-based crew is on site getting the rig ready to start drilling a hole, 90-centimetres wide to help get the miners out.

Kevin Neveu from Precision Drilling says "our reaction was to be as helpful as possible and we focused on working with authorities to make sure our equipment and people have the right capabilities to handle the challenge".

The miners have been trapped for five weeks.
