New details Tuesday about a shocking alleged sexual assault in a Calgary school yard.

Police say the alleged attacker, a 16-year-old boy, and the victim, a 12-year-old girl, arranged to meet each other near Clarence Sansom Junior High Monday afternoon.

Police told CTV Calgary what they've pieced together so far, as details surrounding an alleged sexual assault on this school's property emerge.

Police say the events leading up the attack are becoming clearer.

Staff Sgt. Leah Barber said, "This was not a mob attack on a child walking through a park. This was a group of youth that new each other that had been consuming alcohol and a sexual act took place."

On Monday afternoon, staff at this school called 911.

It appeared a young girl was being attacked.

When police arrived, they found a 16-year-old boy and 12-year-old girl involved in a sexual act.

The girl was taken to hospital.

The boy was taken into custody.

Eight other kids who'd been watching were questioned.

Rasheda Bee lives across the street, he saw it unfold.

Bee told CTV Calgary, "I take a look outside, one boy was on top of the girl, the girl was lying down and the boy was over the girl and he was doing something very badly, very violently to that girl."

Police say the boy and girl met online a week ago and agreed to meet at the park with their friends.

Police say since the girl is only12-years-old, she couldn't' have legally consented, a child must be at least 14-years-old before they can do that.

This advocate for victims of sexual abuse says the age of consent is there for a reason.

Danielle Aubrey of the Calgary Communities against Sexual Assault says, "If you think about a 12-year-old, that is a child. A child that is either in grade 6 or maybe just starting grade 7 and they're children, they're babies. Depending on how they, what they learned and what they've been taught, they may know nothing about sex."

So far no charges have been laid and police say it's possible that there never will be.

However, it's more likely that charges of sexual assault and perhaps sexual interference could be laid in the near future.

The boy that was arrested has since been released into his parent's custody.

The alleged victim in this case was taken to hospital Monday, but has also been released to her parents.

Police say they seized a cell phone from one of the witnesses to see if there was video of the incident.

There wasn't, though they are looking at a different video that was shot from they believe inside the school.

They do now say the witnesses were not cheering this alleged attack on as was originally thought.

They were just sitting in the bleachers, drinking alcohol, a group of people made up of friends of both the alleged attacker and alleged victim.

Police continue to investigate.
