Pricey real estate has forced an Inglewood business to close its doors.

Nectar Desserts has been in the neighbourhood for four years.

But owner Rebekah Pearse says the space is just too expensive.

Experts say there is a growing number of small retailers shutting their doors because of higher rental costs.

Depending on the location, some business owners are paying well into the $40/square foot range. That's well above the $26/average.

Customers of the dessert place are disappointed.

"It's disappointing that she's gotta go find a new location if she wants to continue on, and then the people that she has to let go for the time being," says Kathryn Gerling.

According to one commercial real estate company, consumer demand can drive up the cost of retail space. The more they shop in a store, the more a retailer can pay. And many landlords know that.
