A teen mom from Calgary is in jail tonight charged with murdering her newborn son.

18-year-old Shelby Herchak was arrested Tuesday afternoon.

Police say baby Daniel's death was no accident that the tiny boy suffered repeated blows to the head.

Inspector Doug Andrus of Calgary Police Service told CTV Calgary, "The autopsy determined the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head."

It was that finding that led to a charge of second degree murder against 18-year-old Shelby Herchak.

But right now police won't say if 26-day-old Daniel Herchak was struck with an object or struck against an object.

They will only say that the baby's death was not accidental, that there were repeated blows to the child's head.

They also say not all the autopsy results are in.

Inspector Andrus says, "Those results that I've stated are preliminary results, there are still further tests that need to be completed and those results could take six months to a year."

Daniel Herchak was rushed to hospital from the family's home August 9th.

The call to paramedics came from the child's grandmother.

The newborn died that same morning.

Everyone who had access to the child has been interviewed.

Inspector Andrus told us, "They've been very co-operative throughout the investigation and our investigators have conducted several interviews with family members."

Police also confirmed that a portion of the investigation revolves around Herchak's former Facebook page.

Herchak had written that she had been exhausted and frustrated.

Meanwhile an agency that offers support for young parents didn't have any part in this investigation.

But a spokesperson for the Children's Cottage tells young mother's that it's a sign of strength to ask for help.

Janet Hettler of Children's Cottage told CTV Calgary, "They are not judged; we just to do what is best for the family in a time of crisis."

Shelby Herchak's judgement will now come in court.

Herchak appeared in court this morning.

The case has been put over to September 28th.
