It's been a great summer.

If you're a mushroom.

But for facilities that count on sunshine and warm temperatures, it has been anything but sunny.

Calgary pools are in that category.

Six years ago, the City of Calgary handed over operation of outdoor pools to community groups.

This year, the seven community associations operating outdoor swimming holes stand to lose money, because cool weather has kept people away.

It raises questions of whether the facilities are viable here.

The Calgary Outdoor Pool Association says the future of the pools is now in the hands of their respective associations, which must decide if they'll keep them running.

In the past, the groups have used good years to offset the bad. But this is the third bad summer in a row and money's running out.

This year, the city also reduced the grants it gives to community groups to maintain the pools.
