The Alberta Provincial Rifle Association is fuming over what's happening at a shooting range in Kananaskis.

Shot-up cans and other targets, along with spent bullet casings, litter the ground at the Homestead Shooting Centre.

The APRA, which leases the land from the province, says there's a huge mess at the public range and is calling for action from the government.

The range is used by many licensed gun clubs, including the Calgary Police Service and the RCMP.

But, it says the province won't police the range because of a staff shortage, or give the group the authority to collect fees to help cover the cost for clean-up and maintenance.

"We don't have the human resources or the material resources for constantly doing this. And volunteers coming out every couple of months to clean it up, it'll soon wane on their volunteer spirit because it's just not appreciated," says the APRA's Joe Breslowski.

A ministry spokesperson says the government is willing to work with the association.

"If they come up with an approach to how activity should be happening on that particular piece of land, a management plan goes a long way toward us being able to help them identify solutions," says Dave Ealey.

A range clean-up is scheduled for this Saturday at 9:00 a.m.
