A Heron unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) crashed near Canadian Forces Base Suffield around 11:45 a.m. Friday.

As the UAV crashed to the ground, it hit a utility line, causing a temporary power loss to the area.

Emergency personnel from CFB Suffield responded to the crash and traffic is restricted on Highway 884 just north of the base.

No one was injured in the crash.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

The Canadian Forces conducts training on the Heron at CFB Suffield in cooperation with MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Business Solutions (MDA).

The military uses the Heron UAV for surveillance.

It is currently used by Canadian Forces in Afghanistan.
