Mayoralty candidate Bob Hawkesworth wants to build a whole new line of the LRT in the southeast, and he wants to secure money from the province to do it.

The City can access up to 800 million dollars through the province's Green Trips Program.

Hawkesworth says Council has to decide quickly. Council only meets one more time before it breaks for summer, and the application deadline for funding is at the end of November.

To be eligible, the City will have to cover a third of the cost of the LRT, an estimated 360 million dollars.

Hawkesworth says, "With that amount of money, we could begin and end at here on 10th Avenue and get at least as far as Douglasdale in the southeast."

Hawkesworth said the southeast LRT could start operating as soon as 2015.
