Police are treating the discovery of a body on the banks of the Elbow River near Sandy Beach as suspicious.

Rafters drifting past noticed the body around 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

They notified police, and helped pinpoint the location with the assistance of a HAWCs helicopter.

The body of a man was found just off a public pathway from River Park around 1:30 p.m.

Police say the identity of the man is unknown.

Police did not confirm if there were signs of violence, but they are treating the incident as suspicious.

The Medical Examiner was called in and the body was removed from the scene around 3:30 p.m.

An autopsy will be done to determine a cause of death and the man's identity.
