Despite a massive search, a 28-year-old Calgary man is missing and feared drowned.

On Sunday night, Okotoks RCMP were called to a popular swimming spot near Nature's Hideaway Campground after the man jumped into the Highwood River and was swept away by the strong current.

The man's friends told RCMP he did not resurface after jumping into the water.

The search for the man was hampered by the swift-moving murky water.

Emergency crews from Okotoks and Calgary, including HAWCS helicopter, were unable to locate the man.

The man's name is not being released until his family is notified.

Okotoks RCMP are investigating.

Meantime, Cochrane RCMP are investigating a river tragedy near Bragg Creek over the weekend.

The body of a 22-year-old man was pulled from the water near Redwood Meadows Saturday.

He was spotted screaming for help as he was swept away down the fast moving Elbow River.

Witnesses say the man was in distress as he was carried past a bridge near Bragg Creek.

HAWCS helicopter searched from the air and rescue crews scoured the shore looking for him.

His body was recovered about five kilometres downstream from the point where he was last seen.

The man did not have any floatation devices with him.

The RCMP would like remind everyone to the danger of swimming in open water, in particular swollen rivers and streams.
