This is proving to be a challenging spring for controlling dandelions.

City officials say the weather is to blame for the outbreak of the weeds in city parks.

It's not just dandelions that are a problem though, other broad leaf weeds are really taking root this spring.

Horticulturalists with the city say the small amount of warm weather the city has had was enough to get the weeds growing; and the wet conditions are now preventing crews from applying herbicide to problem areas.

Officials say the herbicide needs to be able to dry on the plants to be effective.

"As soon as the weather turns, we will get out our crews to start on all the sites assessed for broad-leaf control," says James Borrow who heads the integrated pest management program for the city.

Borrow says problem areas are treated every three years to help keep weeds under control.
