Edmonton city council has voted in favour of muffling noisy motorcycles and CTV News has learned Calgary is proposing the same thing.

On Wednesday, a bylaw was passed in Edmonton setting limits on how much noise a motorcycle can make. Anyone caught idling their bike over 92 decibels, or driving over 96 decibels, will now face a $250 fine.

Calgary bylaw officers say they'll soon propose a similar rule here which would restrict noise on all vehicles.

But Mayor Dave Bronconnier says there are already enough bylaws on the books in Calgary and he isn't in favour of adding a new one.

The rules come on the heels of complaints by members of the public who say bikes are simply too loud.

Every motorcycle that comes into Canada has to meet noise standards and, in most cases, bike noises can't exceed around 80 decibles.

Bikes that sound louder than that have likely been modified. Some owners will replace, or remove, the original exhaust pipe that is muffled to meet the legal sound standards.
