The proposed site of a halfway house is causing concern for some residents and business owners in the area.

Homeowners say the John Howard Society facility will be too close to a major park, that is used by many Calgarians, including children, and industrial business owners say they are worried about the safety of their property.

The John Howard Society wants to turn a former masonry industrial site at 4444 Builders Road south east into a halfway house for sex offenders, convicted murders and other former convicts.

Chase De Schover owns an electronics recycling business adjacent to the property, he isn't looking forward to the day his new neighbours might move in.

De Schover says " we get a lot of stuff that people believe is valuable , and these guys are going to be looking right over at it. They are going to get a good view of it all the time".

The proposed halfway house would replace a corrections facility known as the Bedford House which currently operates in Victoria Park, and while the new location is in an area considered light industrial, it is only a few blocks from residential communities.

Parkhill resident Terry Kane is leading the fight to block the necessary landuse redesignation. He says areas such as nearby Stanley Park would be a temptation to residents of the halfway house.
