Campers and quads are causing concern this long weekend.

Thousands of people converge on remote areas in Clearwater County, setting up thousands of random camps.

Critics say they are putting themselves at risk and destroying the landscape.

But those who are camping say they are just out for a good time this long weekend.

"That's my quad there." says camper Ryan Kits "and that's my motor home, we go out riding, it's fun riding with these guys."

Constable Terri Miller of the Clearwater County Highway Patrol took a good look from the air, flying overhead in a chopper. What she sees is shocking.

Cst. Miller sees quads in the Clearwater River, harming fish habitat, ATVs cutting new trails in wetlands, and makeshift camps being set up right beside sour gas wells.

'With Clearwater County having some of the sourest gas in the province, it's probably not the best or safest place for them to be camping." Says Miller.

About 60-thousand campers with 15-thousand ATVs gather to camp on crown land in the massive area every May long weekend. Clearwater County covers about 22 thousand square kilometres, that's about the same land mass as Newfoundland.
