Student told he can't wear kilt to grad

An Alberta student has been told he can't wear a kilt during his graduation ceremony.

Hamish Jacobs wants to honour his Scotish-Canadian heritage at his graduation from Raymond High School in June.

Jacobs asked his school's principal if he could wear the kilt, under his grad gown, while he walked across the stage to accept his diploma.

Jacobs' request was turned down.

Jacobs says, according to the principal, all boys are required to wear dress pants, dress shoes, and a collared shirt when they accept their diploma.

The Westwinds School District says the dress-code policy is in place to prevent students from showing up in shorts or flip flops. The board adds there are provisions that allow students to express their individual style later in the evening during the Grand March and dinner party.

"This young man will have the opportunity to change and wear his kilt for those other events," says Doug Bennett the superintendent for the school division.

Jacobs' uncle has started an online petition and there's a Facebook site that now has 131 supporters.

So far the school board is not budging on its dress code policy.
