A central Alberta man who was shot after allegedly stealing an ATV from a rural property last year has been sentenced to one month in jail.

Harold Groening was charged with theft and stolen property. He pleaded guilty to one count of theft.

Groening was allegedly stealing a quad from a Bashaw area home in March of 2009, when police said the owner began chasing him and fired two shots, hitting Groening.

The property owner, 38-year-old Brian Knight, is facing a long list of charges for allegedly taking the law into his own hands. He is charged with seven offences including assault with a weapon, assault and criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

His preliminary hearing starts in June.
