This is a big weekend for fans of science fiction, fantasy, and horror.

Some major stars of movie, television, comics and art are in town for the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo.

On Friday morning, some of the special guests, including Leonard Nimoy and Malcolm McDowell met with the local media.

Malcolm McDowell is an iconic actor.

He is known for his roles in films like Clockwork Orange and Star Trek Generations where his character killed Captain Kirk.

"It was a great part you know and of course the trekkies were pissed off with me for killing their hero but then you know as time has gone on, I think they've forgiven me and I'm part of the legend now," commented McDowell.

McDowell says he attends one or two conventions a year.

"I do them because it's nice to get out occasionally and meet the fans. You know, after all, at the end of the day, they're the reason we're here so I think it's nice to give a little back and say hello," added McDowell.

Also at the Comic and Entertainment Expo this weekend is Leonard Nimoy who played Mr. Spock on the original Star Trek television series.

It's been 30 years since the 79-year-old actor has been in Calgary, although he's worked in Canada many times over the years.

Like McDowell, Nimoy attends a number of conventions every year.

He says it allows him to keep in touch with fans and find out what they're interested in.

"I've referred to it as a victory lap. It's wonderful to be able to come and visit these people and know that I'm among friends and enjoy their company as they enjoy mine I hope," said Nimoy.

Another guest is award-winning comic book writer and novelist Chris Claremont.

He's well-known to Marvel Comic fans.

He wrote Uncanny X-Men for more than 15 years.

"There's an opportunity to go out and interact. To see why kids, why older readers, enjoy the work. What they're looking for. What they like. What they don't like," said Claremont.

The Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo began in 2006 and has grown to become the largest event of its kind outside of Toronto.

The Expo is at the BMO Round Up Centre Hall D and E at Stampede Park and takes place Saturday and Sunday.
