Canadian native and successful Hollywood film director James Cameron has some harsh words for Alberta's oilsands.

Cameron says Alberta's oilsands are a "black eye" to Canada's image.

The Ontario native is looking to learn more about the Athabasca oilsands after he was contacted by some local groups concerned by its impact.

Cameron is questioning why Canada is spending cash to extract crude oil when he says it could be better spent on wind turbines.

The famous director is expected to get more information on the issues when he meets with the secretariat of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in New York this weekend.

Cameron's biggest hit to date, Avatar, will be released on DVD and Blu-ray this Thursday, which also marks Earth Day.
