More than 500 rabbits were discovered living inside a south Edmonton home a few weeks ago.

"You have to wonder if the rabbits were carrying disease when there were so many of them in the house," said one neighbour who asked not be identified.

The resident tells CTV News rabbit droppings have littered neighbouring yards.

Residents say the animals chewed up their plants and created holes in their yards.

The animals have since been removed from the home, but the damage to the home is extensive.

A public health order states the animals were found in various parts of the home, including kitchen cupboards and air ducts. And huge holes had been created after the animals chewed through the drywall and floors.

Public health officers have ordered the homeowners to vacate.

"When we find people that are living in conditions that are unsafe, then we usually work towards moving them out unless the conditions are corrected," said environmental health officer Sandra Hamilton.

Neighbours say the residents were at the home overnight.

The Edmonton Humane Society is investigating and say charges are pending against the owners.

The Society will not comment on the condition of the animals because the rabbits are considered evidence in the case.

But more information is expected to be released in coming weeks after charges are laid.
