At 8:30 p.m. Saturday, lights across the globe were turned off for 60 minutes. Here in Calgary, power consumption was reduced by 5 megawats or 0.5%.

That's about half as well as we did in 2009 when consumption was down 1% or 10 megawats.

Doris Kaufman with Enmax tells CTV News the numbers are a bit surprising, since the tempurature Saturday evening was well above the freezing mark.

It was -2 the year prior.

But Kaufman does point out the results aren't all bad. The 0.5% reduction means about 4 tonnes of CO2 emmissions didn't enter the atmosphere Saturday Night.

This is the third year Earth Hour was celebrated around the world, and while Calgary has always participated, it hasn't always been well-received.

During the first year, Calgary's power consumption actually went up.
