Fire investigators have completed their investigation into the cause of last week's condo fire on Millrise Drive S.W.

Officials say they believe the blaze was sparked by someone throwing a cigarette butt into a planter.

No charges are pending against the smoker because the Arson Unit says the act was "non-intentional".

Officials say accidental planter building fires started by cigarettes are different from situations where smokers may throw a cigarette butt out the window of their vehicle and start a grass fire because in the latter case, the smoker has no intentional of trying to extinguish it first.

Damage figures for the fire have not yet been released but the building is uninhabitable.

Residents will be meeting with the condo board later this week to discuss options for the severely damaged building.

It is the second time in two weeks a careless disposed cigarette has started a fire and officials say smokers should use common sense and use a glass or metal container instead of simply throwing their cigarette butts away.
