The federal government has unveiled a new avalanche danger scale.

"We strongly believe that people can safely enjoy the backcountry if they are well trained and well informed," says Ian Tomm from the Canadian Avalanche Centre.

The new scale will contain five levels of danger ranging from low to extreme.

It features standardized icons to signify the risk level as well as specific details about what the danger ratings mean.

"We have made major strides to reduce that ambiguity and be very clear and precise in the advice and guidance for the public who are using this danger scale," says Tomm.

The new standard is a Canadian initiative which will be adopted across North America.
