The first ever Alberta Robotic Championships has brought high school students from across the province to Red Deer, where they are putting their creations to the test.

Teams gathered at Red Deer College Saturday for the competition. Students spent several months building their own wireless robots to collect and shoot the most balls into a net.

The technological challenge may sound simple, but participants say it was fiercely competitive.

"It gets pretty competitive, especially since I have two teams from my school, so we have a little bit a rivalry going on," said Molly Norris, a competitor from Wainwright.

Organizers say students entered in some very impressive robots.

"One of the fun things about the tournament is seeing the different ways the students come up with to solve the problem," said Brian McLachlin. "We've got robots that look like Zambonis, others that look like front-end loaders…a number of different designs."

Red Deer College officials say they hope to make the championships an annual event.
