Police have charged a 25-year-old in connection with a hostage taking at a southwest Calgary school.

Thursday afternoon, a man held a woman hostage at A.E. Cross Junior High School for several hours.

Police say the man threatened two members of the staff, including one of his former teachers, with a knife.

A 13-year-old student at the school was hiding near the office at the time and managed to call for help.

Eventually, the man gave up without discovering the boy. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.

Matthew Akani Adeniran, 25, is facing a number of charges including forcible confinement, assault with a weapon, uttering threats, criminal harassment and possession of a weapon.
