An exhibit featuring art work from people with mental illness opens in Calgary on Thursday evening.

"[My piece] shows depression. It has a door and it shows there's an opening somewhere. The doors represent either closing behind us or opening in front of us," explains Ivan Gibson, an artist taking part in the exhibit.

The work is part of the Art Recruit Program.

The program focuses on giving the artists, who all have some type of mental illness, the skills to help them find and keep a job.

"I want to be known for my work, rather than being known for having an illness," says Olivier Martini.

The show runs for the month of March at Art Central which is located at 205-100 7 Avenue S.W.
