Mayor Dave Bronconnier has announced he will not run for re-election as Calgary's mayor.

The surprise announcement came as the mayor delivered his annual state of the city address.

The mayor says whomever gets elected to the position will need to be someone with ideas and a plan rather than someone who says "no" all the time.

Bronconnier says when he took office nine years ago he had an agenda of projects to complete. The mayor says his agenda is done and it's time to move on. "I got into politics to get things done. Looking back, I have a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment because the goal that was set back in 2001 has largely been reached," said an emotional Bronconnier.

There was no hint about what Bronconnier will be moving on to but he does say this will be the end to his public life.
