The city revealed a new snow removal policy to deal with build up on residential streets.
Council added another $10 million to the snow removal pot on Monday bringing the budget up to about $34 million for the period of January to December 2010.
The biggest change will be in residential areas where ruts from excessive snow fall are wreaking havoc on the underside of vehicles.
The new plan will see ruts over 12 cm high in all neighbourhoods shaved down after major snow accumulation.
The city says that the policy will address problems on over 14, 000 km of road in the city.
Significant changes to the policy include:
• Maintenance of an additional 7,000 km of Roads, comprising residential streets and known trouble spots
• Maintenance of priority one routes, primary spot sanding and residential spot sanding to be treated at the same time.
• A focus on known trouble spots including, but not limited to: bus stops, steep grades and high collision locations
• Removal of windrows at the discretion of the Road Maintenance Manager
The city is reminding home owners that they are responsible for sidewalks in front of their homes and says that parked vehicles, parking spaces and driveways may be impeded and sidewalks covered as the plows make their way through the neighbourhood.
