A building that has been in the community of Erlton for nearly a century has been demolished to make way for upgrades to the intersection it is located at.

City crews spent most of the day Sunday tearing down the building which is located at Macleod Trail and 25th Avenue SE.

The 96-year-old building was home to the Shamrock Grocery from 1941 to 1949.

The store made history in 1943 when William Reader, Calgary's Parks Superintendent who created the Reader Rock Garden, suffered a fatal heart attack in the store.

For historian Harry Sanders, the Shamrock holds special meaning.

It belonged to his grandparents and he says he's sad to see it gone.

"I know that there is a lot of heritage that is saved in Calgary. This one is a personal favourite and I would have liked to have seen it kept, but time marches on."

Sanders says the building is not a heritage building and that it's not irregular for these very old structures to be torn down.
