On Friday, a Calgary man was found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of his ex-girlfriend in 2008.

Travis Marc Martel was found guilty of killing 24-year-old, Sarah Nicole Rae, in his northeast condo on August 3, 2008.

Martel originally claimed that he discovered Rae's body in the condo and he was the one who called police.

An autopsy confirmed that Rae was stabbed to death.

Police conducted a massive search for an edged weapon in the neighbourhoods around the condo following the murder.

They later obtained a search warrant for Martel's home and found a weapon that they believed was used to kill Rae.

Martel videotaped Rae's last moments on his cell phone, zooming in and out and focusing on the deep stab wound he inflicted to her chest.

The video was deleted from the phone and recovered from the memory stick by forensics.

When Martel was confronted with the video he claimed that the stabbing was accidental and that he was planning on committing suicide.

Family and friends of Sarah Rae must now prepare impact statements for the court and the crown will be asking for an increase to the minimum sentence of 10 years before parole eligibility.
