The province's new health minister has halted hospital bed closures in Edmonton and Calgary.

Gene Zwozdesky ordered the move so he can review whether, or not, the closures are a wise move.

In September, Alberta Health Services announced 300 acute care beds would be closed over three years.

But Alberta's Tory government has been reversing some controversial decisions recently in the face of dismal poll results at mid-term; earlier this week, plans to transfer dozens of patients from the province's largest mental hospital were scaled back after a public backlash.

Zwozdesky told a talk show that his ministry will spend the next several days costing out the bed closures before making a final decision.
