It's been a terrible week for Calgary's Haitian community. Almost every one of them has family affected by the earthquake and the community is grieving.
On Sunday morning, many of them gathered at local church Iglesia Adventista del Septimo Dia praying for their relatives in Haiti and offering each other support.
Many haven't heard from their relatives in Haiti. For those who have, the news is often grim.
"I said, what about my kids, my daughters? He told me they're ok, my wife she passed away...horrible, horrible. I feel really bad. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do," said Jean Louverture Gracia.
Still, after all that's happened, they can find it in their hearts to offer thanks.
"Worse could have happened," said Jean Fevry. "More people could have perished. When you are looking at it, basically we say thanks, especially for the international community for what they are doing in Haiti."
The small northeast church is a jumble of voices as each person says their own personal prayer for friends and family.
For some, disasters the magnitude of Haiti's earthquake might shake their faith, but the group says it is proof that God is watching their country.
"This happened because God has a plan for Haiti," said Adrienne Mathurin.
