WIND Mobile blew into the city on Friday, offering discount wireless services to Calgarians.

The mobile company is the newest national wireless provider to launch in Canada in a decade and opened four retail stores in the city.

WIND Mobile claims to offer clients a level of wireless service that is not presently available in Canada and provides voice, text and data services to its customers.

The company also has no contract plans and no fees on a lot of services.

Company CEO, Ken Campbell, says Canadian cell phone users have been waiting a long time for new competition to change the landscape and prices in the wireless market.

"Canadian customers have suffered for too long and the wireless industry has not had the level of competition it needs," said Campbell, "we have brought in a really compelling proposition into the market today, prices that are significantly better."

An 8-foot monument was erected outside the 17th Avenue store as a tribute to the thousands of Canadians who the company says helped to shape Canada's first truly competitive wireless alternative.

There are 4 locations in Calgary:

  • Kensington Village Store

          211 10 St. N.W.

  • 17th Avenue Store

          1013 17th Avenue S.W., Suite 109

  • Marlborough Mall

          515 Marlborough Way N.E. Unit 96

  • Westbrook Mall

          8B, 1200 37th Street S.W.

Blockbuster video also has WIND in-store locations:

  • 7740 18th St. E.
  • 380 Canyon Meadows Dr. S.E.
  • 62 Saddletowne Circle N.E.

Originally the CRTC determined the company had too much foreign ownership to launch in Canada but that decision was overturned by the Federal Industry Mnister.

The company launched their products and services in Ontario on Wednesday and has plans to open stores across the country.

Their presence in the market is expected to greatly increase competition among other wireless companies operating in Canada
