Alderman Bob Hawkesworth is hoping to pass a bylaw that would see sprinkler systems installed in all new homes.
Hawkesworth says that sprinklers reduce the costs for homeowners and the city.
Fire officials are in agreement and say residential sprinkler systems save lives.
However, the Canadian Home Builders Association says implementing a bylaw instead of changing the building or fire code would create an unlevel playing field.
So far this year 6 people have died in house fires in Calgary.
