The Wildrose Alliance Party's chief of staff has apologized for a comment he made on Twitter about the premier that landed him in hot water.

Stephen Carter's online comment appeared to mock Premier Ed Stelmach's Ukrainian-Canadian accent.

Carter, who was appointed as Danielle Smith's chief of staff just last month, wrote online, "Just saw da premier making a speech. Dat was quite a speech. Dem media better report it right."

The comment was posted Thursday after the premier gave a speech at the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties in Edmonton.

"You know don't put anything down on the Internet that you don't want to see on the front page of the newspaper or on the six o'clock news," said NDP Leader Brian Mason.

Carter called the premier's spokesperson, Tom Olsen, to offer an apology.

"I don't know where it came from, it certainly wasn't intended like that. If anything it was just to point out the premier has a challenged relationship with our media," said Carter.

But some believe despite an apology, the damage is already done.

"I don't know what this new party yet stands for but I hope they'll move quickly to correct this, there's just no place for this in Alberta or anywhere for that matter," said the Minister of Aboriginal Relations Gene Zwozdesky.

This isn't the first time a person in Alberta politics posted questionable remakes online. Last spring, Conservative MLA Doug Elniski apologized for sexist remarks he made on his blog.
