In part of a national campaign to make Canada's roads safer, Alberta sheriffs cracked down on unsafe drivers over the Thanksgiving long weekend.

From Friday to Monday, sheriffs laid 2,271 charges in Operation Impact across the province, which included, 1,163 for speeding violations, 406 for seatbelt infractions, and over 400 charges for non-hazardous violations such as driving with a suspended licence.

Sheriffs also arrested 13 people for outstanding warrants and removed 22 suspected impaired drivers from the road.

Another 418 charges were laid by RCMP in Whitecourt, Wetaskiwin, Olds and Airdrie for speeding violations and for Gaming and Liquor Act infractions.

In October, Alberta's Highway Patrol and police are focusing their safety message on seatbelts and child safety seats.

In Alberta, every person travelling in a motor vehicle must wear a seatbelt or use a child safety seat.
