A Calgary mother of three made her first court appearance Tuesday on a charge of keeping livestock within city limits.

Mary March raises three chickens on her property.

She's had the chickens for 6 months.

Early in September she was told by Calgary Bylaw Services to get rid of them within 30 days but she refused.

March says, the chickens don't smell, they don't make noise and they make great pets.

She says "I got the chickens so I have food, that's why I got them, and I have three kids and it's hard to feed three kids. Everybody knows that ".

March will make her next court appearance April 1, 2010.

March is getting a lot of support from a group known as CLUCK which is the Calgary Liberated Urban Chicken Klub.
