There are calls for stricter construction safety standards after debris flew off yet another downtown high rise.

A stop work order was placed against the site of the Homburg-Harris Centre at 215 9th Ave. S.W.

On Saturday evening, a piece of scaffolding fell from the 19th floor and crashed onto a nearby parkade ramp.

Centro Construction is responsible for the Homburg-Harris site and has come to the attention of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety on several occasions.

The company is currently facing safety code violation charges for a 2007 incident in which a worker fell several stories.

In May 2009, a worker died at this same site.

Lance Orr was employed by Pagnotta Industries, a sub-contractor at the site, when he was crushed to death by a concrete form.

The province is still investigating his death.

The site was recently looked at by inspectors as part of a review by the city of 27 local high rise buildings.

The company passed inspection, but Alderman John Mar says more needs to be done to ensure safety

"I am working with our administration in particular with planning and development to ensure this site and all others that are in the city of Calgary are maintaining their safety standards or there will be consequences'" dais Ward 8 Alderman John Mar.

This is just the latest in a string of similar incidents at Calgary construction sites.

Since August, there have been at least 5 investigations into debris falling from high rises.

In one tragic case, a falling bundle of sheet metal killed a 3-year-old girl and injured two other members of her family as they walked near a 9th Ave. S.W. construction site.

Charges were laid under the Alberta Safety Codes Act against the owner of Germain Residences Ltd., the general contractor, Grenville-Germain Calgary Ltd., and the sub-contractor, Flynn Canada in this case on Friday.
