A two-year-old girl was struck by a vehicle in a Hinton, Alta. parking lot Saturday afternoon and later died of her injuries.

Around 5 p.m. police say the parents of the young girl had momentarily lost sight of the child while they were at a yard sale in the parking lot.

Hinton RCMP said there were no known eye witnesses in the area so investigators have few leads to go on at this time.

"We only hope that we can put a resolution to this soon of what happened, possible it could have been a mishap," said Sgt. Dan Bradford with the Hinton RCMP.

The girl was rushed to a local hospital by her parents and then flown to hospital in Edmonton where she later died as a result of the injuries.

Investigators are requesting information from anyone who may have seen the girl, witnessed any possible collision involving a child, or who may have been operating a vehicle in the area of 109 Seabolt Drive in Hinton on September 12th.

Residents in the area are shocked that no one has come forward.

"How can you hit something and not know? Wouldn't you feel it while you were driving?" said Christina Campbell.

An autopsy on the young girl was conducted Monday but results have not yet been released.

Anyone with information is asked to call Hinton RCMP at (780) 865-2455 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-8477.

Hinton is about 290 kilometres west of Edmonton.
