Calgary police are hoping a Crime Stoppers reenactment will lead to tips that will help them solve a violent sexual assault case.

The attack happened three years ago at 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 6th.

A man on a black 10-speed bicycle asked an 18-year-old woman for a cigarette while she was near the intersection of 44 Street and 4 Avenue S.E.

He rode away but returned while she was crossing a field in the 700 block of 47 Street S.E.

The man got off his bike and started stabbing the victim in the head and body. He then sexually assaulted her.

The victim was at the reenactment on Wednesday and says "I didn't want to die. I didn't want to be taken from the city so my family couldn't find me. I just wanted to live."

In an attempt to fight back, the woman bit the suspect's hand. Police also believe he may have ended up with stab wound from his own weapon.

"There was a struggle here for about 45 minutes and with that level of violence the victim probably saved her own life by fighting as much as she did," says Det. Rene LaFreniere from the Calgary Police Service.

The man was eventually scared off by someone getting into a car and took off running along 47 Street.

He left behind the knife, his belt and the bike.

Police think he may have lived in the area at the time.

The suspect is described as Aboriginal and between the ages of 18 and 20. He is about 178 cm (5'10") tall, and at the time weighed about 77 kg (170 lbs). He has slicked-down, short dark hair, he was clean shaven and had thick eyebrows.

A man matching the description was reported to be knocking on doors in the area trying tog et a ride to a hospital.

Anyone with information about the brutal attack that happened three years ago is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
