Canadians across the country are honouring our peacekeepers past and present Sunday.

In Calgary, a special ceremony was held at Peacekeeper Park.

People gathered as the names of the 286 Canadian peacekeepers killed since 1948 were read out loud.

A CF-18 roared over the crowd to commemorate National Peacekeepers' Day.

"It's one of those days that really makes it just worth while to be a Canadian," said Minister of Veterans Affairs, Greg Thompson. "We are really reflecting on the professionalism of our soldiers, their dedication to the mission, and I guess a reminder of what they have done around the world over the last number of years."

A poignant moment was the official unveiling of the names of 44 peacekeepers and 22 soldiers killed that had been added to the Wall of Honour.

Four Canadian diplomats killed were also honoured.

A second wall was constructed earlier this year.

It was on this day in 1974 that Canada suffered its greatest loss of peacekeepers in one day.

Nine peacekeepers were killed when their aircraft was shot down over Lebanon.
