Community leaders and historic society members are squaring off against developers in Inglewood.

The owner of the former brewery wants to tear down some of the buildings on the site.

Ron Matheson of Matco Investments owns the property.

Matco was part of the group which tore down Penny Lane Mall downtown to make way for two office towers.

Matheson couldn't be reached for comment Thursday but the company has applied to demolish a number of buildings on the site.

The community says it isn't against redeveloping the site but isn't happy about the lack of information.

"No word to the community about his plans, hopes, aspirations, intentions, and it's really worrisome," says Jian-Carlo Carra, Inglewood Community Association President.

There are 16 buildings on the three hectare site and Bob van Wegan of the Calgary Heritage Initiative Society says they don't need to be demolished.

"Generations of Calgarians have deep connection to this site. There are fabulous examples of historic industrial buildings being incorporated into new developments."

The demolition application is on hold until a historic impact assessment is done.

A town hall meeting is being held Thursday night at the Inglewood Community Association located at 1740 24 Avenue S.E. at 7 p.m.
