The University of Calgary is not immune to the economic crunch.

Staff have just been told there will be layoffs.

Late Tuesday afternoon, the university announced 200 people will be losing their jobs.

It's primarily support staff, meaning administrative, human resources, and information technology workers that will take the hit.

University officials say a cap on provincial funding to the university for the coming year, combined with financial losses suffered on investments in the university's endowment fund has led to the layoffs.

"We've taken a number of different tactics to try and decrease the expenditures of the university," said Colleen Turner, U of C Vice-President of External Relations. "One of them is staff reductions which will have a personal impact on many lives and many families. We've also done an across the board decrease of 3 per cent in the budgets of all faculties and units."

The university also plans to increase its revenues by accepting 15-hundred additional students this fall, mainly into the faculties of business, education, and medicine.
